During summer, high temperature and humidity in Qatar represent a real challenge when it comes to staying active.

To help overcome heat exhaustion, the Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) shares several tips on how to stay in shape during the hot summer months. "We shouldn't blame the heat for being inactive but look for solutions. Incorporating some physical activity into our daily lives during the summer months should be a priority for all families, rather than letting the season decide what we do," said Dr Wadha al Baker, manager of wellness and health promotion programme at PHCC.

  • Stay hydrated: PHCC recommends to drink water before, during and after physical activity, even if you don't feel thirsty. Bring a bottle of water with you or plan water stops along your fitness routine.
  • Adapt your workout schedule: By doing your workout before it gets too hot, you will avoid the exhaustion from the heat and will start your day on a positive note. You also have the possibility to train in the late evening when the sun is down and make physical activities feel easier.
  • Choose light clothing made of natural materials: Light-colour clothing reflects light. Furthermore, light-colour clothing looks softer and cooler.
  • Stay Indoors: When temperatures rise too much it is advised to seek shade or find fun indoors, such as going to the gym or visiting the mall.
  • Choose water-based activities: Swimming, for example, can be an intense workout without overheating your body during summer, and renders being out in the heat more bearable.
