Hamad International Airport (HIA) as part of its continual support for the local community organised a highly successful blood donation drive on Monday March 9, 2015, in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior (MOI) and Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC).

A fully equipped mobile blood donation unit provided by HMC was deployed to HIA for the community initiative along with a team of medical specialists. The drive, which began at 8am and continued throughout the day, saw great success with a huge turnout from both the airport and MOI staff. Badr Al Meer, Chief Operating Officer at HIA said: “Blood donation drives play a very important role in spreading awareness, especially among the younger generation, about the benefits of blood donation, both for the donor and the recipient.”

Mr Al Meer added: “This campaign is the airport’s way of showing its support for the medical community and the society of Qatar. It is also an opportunity for the airport’s staff members to participate in community service, as participation in such initiatives make an immensely positive contribution to our society.Efforts like this are also in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030, which aims to contribute to the social development in Qatar and ensure a healthy society for the future of the country.”

Badr Al Meer thanked Hamad Medical Corporation and the Ministry of Interior for their efforts toward the organisation of the event. He also expressed his appreciation towards the staff members of both the airport and MOI for their participation which made the event such a great success. Abdulaziz Al Mass, Vice President Commercial at HIA said: “We are happy to be a part of this benevolent event, which gives us an opportunity to give back to the community and help save the lives of many who have emergency blood requirements and suffer from blood disorders. The act of blood donation only takes a few minutes but has a lasting impact on the society as a whole.”

Sadiqa Ismail, Medical Manager at Blood Donor Center at HMC said: “Blood drives help us spread awareness about the importance of voluntary blood donation. Every drop of blood is an important contribution to saving one’s health in emergency situations and we are grateful to our staff members and every donor for volunteering in helping us save lives.” Brigadier Essa Arar Al Rumaihi, Director of Airport Security Management said that the primary objective for MOI is to use this event as a platform to raise awareness about the importance of blood donation which helps increase blood reserves in the country and saves lives.

Colonel Mohamed Rashid Al Mazrouei, Director of the Airport Immigration Department, stated that he was very pleased with the turnout for the event and the whole hearted participation of HIA and its staff members, which shows the organisations’ commitment towards social responsibility. All donors were first tested to make sure they met the HMC standards of fitness to donate blood.
