Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) has urged Qatar's citizens and residents to be active daily and aim to achieve at least 150 minutes of physical activity in a week through a variety of activities. The Corporation gave the advice in preparation for Qatar's National Sport Day which falls on February 14, 2017, in an effort to promote healthy living in the country.
 
In a press statement on Tuesday, the Corporation stressed its commitment to raising awareness on the benefits of regular sports and physical activities by promoting a healthy culture and encouraging citizens to take up the habit of exercising regularly. "Given the overwhelming evidence of the benefits of sports, it is obvious that we should all be physically active. This is essential if you want to live a healthy and fulfilling life in old age. It is medically proven that participating in regular physical activity not only aids physical and mental health, but also has numerous positive effects later in life," the statement read.
 
It added, "Participation in sports not only offers excitement and fun, it reduces the chance of being overweight, building healthy bones and muscle and reducing the risk of chronic disease, such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer." According to the Corporation, active people tend to live longer with a stronger circulatory system, including cardiovascular, reducing the risk of atherosclerosis diseases, increasing muscle fibre size and reducing the chance of aging diseases.
 
Many studies have confirmed regular physical exercise can boost self-esteem, mood, sleep quality and energy, as well as reducing risk of stress, depression, dementia and Alzheimer's disease, the Corporation said. The Corporation urged citizens to take advantage of the various programmes provided by health and wellness facilities in the health centres across the country.
