Al Faisal International for Investment (AFII) recently hosted an interactive session with Prof Andrew Garner at Qatar University (QU). Organized by AFII and Qatar University’s College of Business and Economics, the session was aimed at helping students in identifying their goals for the future. It also served towards the realization of the values and objectives outlined in Qatar National Vision 2030, as well as the development strategies and the Qatarization initiatives. Dr Babiker Ibrahim, Lecturer of Management, College of Business and Economics at Qatar University too graced the occasion as a special guest.

On this occasion, H.E. Sheikh Jassim bin Faisal Al Thani, Board Member of AFII and member of the Board of Trustees at QU, welcomed Prof Andrew Garner and read out a message on behalf of his father, H.E. Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani, Chairman of AFII: "The investment in our youth is synonymous with investment in the future of Qatar. In line with this, Qatar University along with other important universities in town are leading the progress of reforming, developing and enhancing the post-secondary levels, the scientific research field as well as cultural and intellectual field so that our economy will no longer be dependent on the energy sector alone,” Sheikh Jassim noted. “We should, therefore, now become an economy-based on education and sustainability where we will be the inner energy and engine driving it forward,” he added.

Speaking about career management & career development, Prof. Andrew Garner - who is a mentor to several globally high profile CEOs - urged students to establish their unique brand identity and differentiate themselves from others. He also stressed on the importance of goal setting and being in the right place at the right time. "If you do not know where you are going, the road will get you there... But be careful as there is not any journey without a goal. Hence, it is important to set goals and then taking action once you are fairly certain about your career goals," Prof. Garner cited.

He also delved deeper into several aspects of preparing for the job hunt, including resumes, cover letters, interviews and an employer's expectation while interviewing candidates. "The interviewers are looking for new skills, and some unique factor from you. So, this is your chance to showcase yourself as a brand and display your talents," Prof. Andrew Garner added.

Commenting on the initiative, Dr. Nitham Hindi, Dean of the College of Business and Economics at Qatar University, said: “Conducting such interactive sessions will help our students build knowledge & understanding and gain an insight into several aspects of career building & progression. This underlines the college’s efforts to provide students with a highly intellectual environment to explore and achieve their full potential, which will contribute to shaping the career of future of professionals in line with the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030."
