The various singers, musicians, and dancers brought the audience back to Istanbul, its palaces and mosques as well as Anatolian villages where moments of life were celebrated with joy and music. Joy and sadness, myths and legends expressed themselves in the Turkish culture through music and dances. They are fully part of a collective memory that builds on musical heritage to make future generations understand the depth and the richness of their culture. The evening was a reflection of the cultural diversity of Turkey, shaped by people, geography and history. Festive folk dances alternated with reflective and spiritual opuses played with Ney, a traditional flute, as well as more upbeat popular music.

While an orchestra delighted the audience with traditional classical and popular music, artists Garip Ay and Ahmet Sula offereda feast for their eyes with Ebru art (marble painting) and calligraphy demonstrations on stage. Reflecting on the Years of Culture in general and Qatar Turkey 2015 in particular, Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani said “I’m excited and proud to celebrate the strong artistic heritage and links between Qatar and Turkey this year. Doing so will promote mutual understanding and strengthen our existing ties. It will also support and inspire the next generation of cultural audiences and ideas. I look forward to what promises to be an incredible year.”
