The Supreme Council of Health on Thursday launched a novel campaign under its National Cancer Programme at Katara aiming to increase awareness about the disease among families and to dispel myths associated with it. The two-day drive is the first to be presented under the National Cancer Programme targeting families.
 
The objective of the event is to familiarise Qatar's population with the various types of cancer and dispel the myths associated with them as part of phase one of the Myth Refutation campaign launched on World Cancer Day on February 4, sources said. 
 
The cancer myth refutation campaign is split into two phases with the first phase focusing on increasing awareness about cancer among families and the second devoted to dismissing the specific myths associated with cancer.

High profile, community based cancer champions are being recruited for the campaign to deliver the messages required to remove the stigma and the taboo associated with cancer. The National Cancer Programme, responsible for delivering this initiative is a partnership between the Supreme Council of Health, Hamad Medical Corporation and Primary Health Care Corporation. 
 
Meanwhile, clinical staff from the Public Health Department of the Supreme Council of Health offered health check-ups to passers by, while in another area children partook in sporting activities to mark the launch of the campaign. Besides, fitness classes, Capoeria, dance routines and rhythmic gymnastics were also held to mark the occasion. It is worth mentioning here that more initiatives are set to be taken in near future to raise awareness about cancer amongst the population in Qatar.
