QU President Dr Hassan Al Derham yesterday performed the ribbon-cutting ceremony to inaugurate Qatar University’s (QU) new gymnasium.

The event was attended by QU VP for Administration and Financial Affairs Dr Khalid Al-Khater, QU VP for Student Affairs Dr Khalid Al-Khanji, QU Chief Strategy and Development Officer Dr Darwish Al-Emadi, QU Student Services and Activities Director Mr Abdulla Al-Yafei, Manager of Sports and Recreation Activities at QU Student Activities Department Ms Asmaa Al-Naemi, and Aquatic Center Section Head at QU Student Activities Department Mr Walid Dessouki, as well as members of the university community.

The event, which comes on the sidelines of the National Sports Day, reflects QU’s commitment to motivate and encourage the community members to exercise and practice sports in their daily life. The ceremony included an address by Dr Hassan Al Derham and performances of physical and swimming activities by QU student athletes. The new gymnasium, which is located at the Aquatic Center (A04), is equipped with world-class fitness equipment. The Aquatic Center consists of three swimming pools -- Olympic pool, diving pool, and learning pool. It also contains a gym as well as a recreation center, which includes a sauna and hot and cold Jacuzzi. The facilities are available for both QU members and the general community with annual membership.

In his remarks, Dr Hassan Al Derham said: “Qatar University is committed to providing its community with a healthy and developed environment. Today, we inaugurated a new gymnasium for male students and we will continue our efforts to develop the University’s infrastructure and increase our support of sports-related activities.” QU faculty, students, staff and their families will celebrate tomorrow the annual National Sports Day through a series of sporting and fitness events on the QU campus and at Katara.
