The World Cup in Qatar should take place in the winter months for the sake of spectators, according to a new report published in the International Journal of Biometeorology. Researchers compared temperatures in Doha between March 1999 and January 2014 to determine the “most suitable in terms of thermal comfort for visitors attending the event”.

The results showed that this kind of event may be not appropriate for visitors if it went ahead in the traditional June/July period, if it is placed during months with extreme conditions. It described the climate over May to September as “extreme conditions”, with the prospect of visitors suffering from heat stress.

“A more appropriate time would be the months November to February, when thermally comfortable conditions are much more frequent,” it added. Organisers have consistently said that Qatar would be able to host either a summer or winter tournament, but FIFA’s president, Sepp Blatter has indicated he would prefer to host the event in winter when temperatures are more moderate.

Qatar tested cooling technology this summer for fans watching games from the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
