Occidental Petroleum of Qatar Ltd. (Oxy Qatar), in partnership with Qatar Business Incubation Center (QBIC), gathered to officially launch Mawaheb Competition 2016. The main objective of the talent competition is to support a Qatari video producer or graphic designer with financial backing and the knowledge to make his or her skills a sustainable profession.

The competition requires entrants to complete a form, which includes five sections:

  • Section one – the competitor’s basic details and contact information,
  • Section two – skills background,
  • Section three – whether or not the participant is an already established company with an active Qatari partner,
  • Section four – questions on how the competitor would generate income with his or her talent, and
  • Section five – submission of two to three of the competitor’s best original works.

The applicant’s submissions will be evaluated based on the following selection criteria:

1.            Are the artworks unique and creative?

2.            What impact can the applicant provide to Qatari society?

3.            How will the applicant utilize a Mawaheb grant?

4.            Can the applicant generate income?

5.            Does the applicant have original artworks?

The winner will be awarded with the opportunity to participate in QBIC’s LeanStartup Program. The LeanStartup program includes:

1.            a 10-week intensive program with a one-week on and one-week off frequency,

2.            four or five sessions from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. during the week on, and

3.            assignments and coaching during the week off.

The top three proposals will be presented in front of jury.

The winner will also be awarded QAR 200,000 over a two-year period when the artist completes certain milestones and the incubation process, all as more fully described below.

QBIC’s partnership with Oxy Qatar includes a confirmed seat at its signature LeanStartup Program, managing the administration of the grant funds, tracking deliverables, performance, and outcome,and providing quarterly reports on milestones.  QBIC’s role in this initiative is to develop the entrepreneurial side of the talent by providing guidance to create a startup and help ensure its sustainability. Further, QBIC will provide business workshops, will keep track of the winner’s development based on their LeanStartup Program, and will work with milestones and evaluate when the winner will be ready to receive funds.

Mr. Kelly noted that Mawaheb evolved from the “Oxy Adopts a Qatari Artist”created by the company last year. Through Mawaheb, Oxy Qatar is supporting the cultural goals of Qatar’s 2030 National Vision. The winner of Mawaheb will be a talented Qatari who will be able to develop his or her business skills in order to thrive as an artist while generating an income.Oxy Qatar is partnering with QBIC to bring their expertise to achieve this goal, with the hope that Oxy Qatar’s financial award and QBIC’s LeanStartup Program will provide the winner the tools for long-term success.

Competitors must meet the eligibility requirements listed below.

•             He or she must be a Qatari national with a minimum age of 22 and not exceeding 35 years old.

•             If the entrant is applying as a company that has multiple owners, one owner must be a Qatari national. The participating company should not be in business more than three years.

The winner will be announced on August 2016. The competition is open from now until Sunday, 17th July 2016.
