The Child Development Center at Hamad Medical Corporation’s (HMC) Rumailah Hospital, in collaboration with Qatar Islamic Bank, recently held an event to mark International Day of Persons with Disabilities. The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is celebrated on 3 December every year to recognize those individuals living with some form of disability.

Over 150 children and their family members enjoyed various activities hosted by HMC in recognition of the day. Planned events were tailored to people with disabilities, promoting and celebrating their full and effective participation in society. Children attended the events were treated to healthy meals and gifts. “The main objective of International Day of Persons with Disabilities is to raise awareness of the rights of people with disabilities; to enhance their self-confidence and to extend emotional and social support to them and to their family members,” said Mr. Shameem Kabir, Program Coordinator at the Child Development Center.

The mother of Aasem, a participating six-year-old who sustained a concussion and pelvic fracture after a car accident last October, said she had a positive experience at HMC while her son was receiving care from one if its multidisciplinary teams. “The healthcare services provided to my son at HMC were highly commendable, especially the Ambulance Service who rushed to the scene within minutes of the accident. The treatment team at Hamad General Hospital and the physiotherapy and occupational therapy services at Rumailah Hospital were very good. I am so thankful that my son has now recovered and will be discharged from hospital soon,” she said.

The family of two-year-old Mohamed Ashraf, who has Down’s syndrome, said they were happy to be invited to participate in the event. They praised the high standard of care their child, who has been treated at the Center since he was six months old. He is receiving treatment at the Child Development Center from a multidisciplinary care team that includes doctors, nurses and other health professionals such as physiotherapists.
