Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) and the Al Faisal Without Borders (ALF) Foundation last night jointly launched two very important campaigns – the Ramadan Voluntary Blood Donation campaign and the National Organ Donation campaign.

The two Ramadan campaigns – now in their fifth year - were officially inaugurated by His Excellency Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of ALF at the City Centre Doha. For the voluntary blood donation campaign, mobile blood donor units are being dispatched to locations around Qatar to encourage voluntary blood donation. The main Blood Donor Center on the grounds of Hamad General Hospital next to the Consultative Council is open to donors from 6pm to midnight during Ramadan.

The National Organ Donation campaign booths will be set up in shopping malls and other prominent locations around the country. Qatar Organ Donation Center’s (Hiba) specially-trained employees are available to speak to the public about the importance of organ donation and answer questions people might have. HMC has expressed its appreciation to His Excellency Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani, as well as other local organizations and shopping malls for sponsoring and hosting these vital campaigns throughout Ramadan.

Speaking at the event, Sheikh Faisal said the charity always strives to create community partnerships with organizations like HMC. “This campaign is vital to the health of our nation,” he said. “It aims to provide support and assistance to patients in need of blood, and to spread the culture of voluntary blood and organ donation throughout the society. We hope this year’s campaign will be equally successful and attract even more donors and today we affirm the cultural vision of ALF as a leading national and international institution that aspires to promote sustainable development and decency”.

Dr. Yousuf Al Maslamani, Director of Qatar Organ Transplant Center at HMC, said member of the public can visit the stands to learn more about organ donation and transplantation and those who are interested can register as a donor. "Visitors to the stands will be able register as an organ donor or receive more information about what it means to be a donor,” Dr. Al Maslamani said.

Dr. Riadh Fadhil, Director of Qatar Organ Donation Center at HMC, said the main objective of the campaign was to increase awareness within the community about organ donation with 14 organ donation stands placed in different locations across Qatar.  “We are also seeking to increase the number of registered donors and to hopefully address misconceptions that people may have regarding organ donation and transplantation services in Qatar,” Dr. Fadhil said.

Mr. Ali Al Khater, Chief Communications Officer for HMC thanked Sheikh Faisal and ALF for their continued support. “HMC is honored to collaborate with a charitable organization like Al Faisal Without Borders Foundation on important public health awareness campaigns such as the organ and blood donation campaigns,” Mr. Al Khater said. “We believe that donating blood or registering as an organ donor is among the noblest of acts, and we thank everyone who has supported these campaigns so far and hope that others are inspired to give the gift of life and donate too.”

Ms. Sadika Abbas, Medical Manager for the Blood Donor Unit at HMC said campaigns like this one in Ramadan ensure Qatar is able to meet 100 percent of its blood supply needs. “This is as a result of widespread public and organizational support for blood donation and recognition of its importance,” Ms. Abbas said.
