Hamad Bin Khalifa University Press (HBKU Press) has recently published the proceedings from the first International Meeting on Advanced Technologies in Energy and Electrical Engineering (IMAT3E) on their Open Access platform, QScience.com. The conference, held from 22–23 November, 2018 was hosted by Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah (SMBA) University, Fez, Morocco.

The IMAT3E conference proceedings cover a wide range of theoretical contributions (including new techniques, concepts, and analyses) and practical contributions (including system experiments, prototypes, and new applications) seen at the conference. The highlighted innovations in the field of renewable energy, electrical engineering, embedded systems, and artificial/computational intelligence have been implemented into devices we utilize daily to improve our quality of life and how we function day-to-day.

In the article, Innovative Building Materials for Energy Performance in Buildings, authors Basma M’lahfi, Mostafa El Qandil and Driss Amegouz take a look at innovative building materials that can resolve the issue of high energy consumption from heating and cooling buildings. As governments shift towards policies that encourage sustainability, energy-efficiency and sustainable construction, contracting companies are being encouraged to construct buildings that are capable of offering thermal comfort with a considerable reduction in energy expenditure and that induce a significant decrease in emissions. The authors suggest that new materials, like corrugated cardboard panels recycled from packaging industries, hemp fibers, flax, rapeseed, and date palm wood can be used for insulation and are more environmentally-friendly than traditional building materials. Essentially, the authors posit that solutions to ensure thermal comfort in buildings can be found through the development of innovative building materials based on natural fibers with focus on natural materials that are abundant in the region.

The first edition of the IMAT3E was chaired by Professor Abdelaziz El Gzizal, Education Director of École Supérieure de Technologie de Fès.  Saad Motahhir, a professor from École Nationale des Sciences Appliquées Fès and member of the IMAT3E conference organizing committee, acted as the guest editor for the proceedings. “HBKU Press’s publication of the conference proceedings is essential to disseminate the ideas discussed and developed during the event to a wider audience without any barriers to access,” Motahhir explained. “We seize this opportunity to address them all our sincere thanks and gratitude.”
