This year’s UCL Qatar Master’s (MA) students in the Museum and Gallery Practice Programme, have combined their efforts, in collaboration with Sidra Medicine and Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar, to create a virtual exhibition that explores becoming a mother and the journey of pregnancy. The exhibition carried out by UCL Qatar, a Qatar Foundation Partner University, launched on its own website www.umoumah.com.

The exhibition named ‘Umoumah’, which stands for “motherhood” in Arabic, features five thematic units woven together through different mediums such as video, poetry, interactive games, educational activities among others. The aim of the virtual exhibition is to explore the topic of support for expectant mothers in Qatar, with the purpose of empowering them, their families and the medical community. The MA in Museum and Gallery Practice Programme is designed to help shape future generations of museum professionals and cultural leaders in Qatar and the region. The student exhibition project is one of the core modules the MA students undertake each year and gives students the opportunity to visually showcase their talent and skills.

Dr. Sam Evans, Director of UCL Qatar, said “I am very proud of the outcome of this exhibition. Our talented students have worked extremely hard with the academic team and partners to bring this to life. To be able to switch this project from being a physical to a virtual exhibition is a major achievement and demonstrates great teamwork, creativity, dedication, commitment, ingenuity and thorough understanding of UCL Qatar’s academic mission. Combining this with agility and resilience has turned a crisis into an opportunity. The virtual exhibition provides students with unique expertise which they will be able to draw from in their future careers. We are excited for the public to see and witness the huge talent that the nation’s arts and culture sector will inherit.”

Dr. Catharina Hendrick, Lecturer in Museum Studies at UCL Qatar, and one of the directors of the exhibition, stated: “Completing this project is a demanding process for all students, who must curate, market, design and deliver an exhibition. The students have excelled and have worked extremely well to put on an exhibition to a high professional standard that delivers the message about the journey of becoming a mother and the support available to them and their families.”

Dr. Eman Nasralla, Manager of Stakeholder Engagement and Events at Sidra Medicine said: “We are pleased to partner with UCL Qatar and the virtual Umoumah exhibition. Sidra Medicine is one of the few hospitals in the region that takes a multidisciplinary approach to supporting a woman’s prenatal and postnatal journey. Not only by investing in ground-breaking research in the field but with our world-class services ranging from reproductive medicine, gynecology, obstetrics, internal medicine and postpartum mental health support. We hope the exhibition will be a source of inspiration for women in Qatar to feel assured of the resources and quality of care available to them in the country.”

Commenting on the exhibition launch, MA student, Radouane Arraoui, who is  part of the team that created the virtual exhibition, said: "We have put a lot of effort into this exhibition; with the current circumstances, we are really excited that we can still virtually showcase our work to the public. We have learned many new skills that we will continue honing throughout our programme and will take them with us in our professional careers.”
