“The Big Day Out”, Qatar’s first music festival, opened yesterday evening with bands from all over the world taking to the stage with even more acts set to perform again throughout today. The event, sponsored by Vodafone-Qatar and hosted on the beach at the InterContinental hotel, began with a family day performance yesterday, with today’s event for over 21’s starting at 2pm.

Bands playing over the two-day event include Hoobastank, Toploader, Aswad, Akcent, Mashrou3 Leila and a variety of local bands. Britain, US, Romania, Lebanon and numerous other countries are being represented, as well as the local artists taking to the stage. Members of Toploader and Hoobastank yesterday expressed excitement ahead of the event, and said that they were looking forward to being part of the first festival of its type to be held here.


Director of the consumer business unit for Vodafone-Qatar, Daniel Horan, said: “We’re delighted to be hosting the Big Day Out music festival. Vodafone wants to keep on making a world of difference for all people in Qatar through great services, products and also exciting events that will make life more fun.” “The Big Day Out is one of many more exciting activities to come,” he added.

Event organiser Jared McCulloch said: “We are looking forward to hosting the biggest live music event that Qatar has ever seen – we have something for everyone, rock, dance, reggae! It’s all here for everyone to enjoy.” “We look forward to working with our partners in the future bringing more concerts and music stars to Qatar,” he stated.

Tickets for the event can be purchased at Vodafone stores at City Center, Landmark and Villaggio as well as at Crepaway, Saqr music stores, Columbiano coffee and TimeOutTickets.com, explained a spokesperson. The spokesperson added that all entrants must show their IDs to prove they are over 21 for admission into the event.
