Graduating artists and designers from Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar (VCUQatar) will showcase the work that comprised their individual theses at a special exhibition and reception to be held on Sunday May 1 at 5.30 p.m. at VCUQatar’s Gallery and at Room 390 at VCUQatar.

Entry to the exhibition is free. It will remain open until May 21 for the BFA exhibition, and May 28 for the MFA exhibition. The VCUQatar BFA & MFA Exhibition is a chance for the public to discover Qatar’s emerging talent in the fields of graphic, interior and fashion design, painting and printmaking, and art history. It showcases the works of graduates from VCUQatar’s Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree (BFA) and Master of Fine Arts Degree (MFA) programs.

Doha’s unprecedented urban and architectural developments and innovations have been tremendous sources of inspiration for students of VCUQatar’s Interior Design program. The works on display from the graduates of the Interior Design program range from design solutions for multiple needs, to housing solutions for migrant workers, as well as sustainability initiatives, ethical approaches to interior designs, traditional and holistic designs, and an avant-garde design for simulation spaces which would mimic the isolation and conditions of living in colonies on Mars.

Muneera Spence, the chair of Graphic Design program at VCUQatar said: “I want to encourage students to critically engage with the world, through active collaboration across various disciplines.” The works on show from graduates of the Graphic Design program include studies mapping the mathematical motion of stars, on the potential shortcomings of urban civilization, on gender stereotypes, and on recreating Qatar’s forgotten architectural identity through visual languages. Other graduates have focused on how to visualize the powerful sense of smell or how light and its influence on prayer times can affect a design.

VCUQatar’s four-year BFA Painting and Printmaking program encourages graduates not just to find opportunities, but to create them, not just to seek answers, but to dare to ask questions, and not simply to understand the world, but to seek to change it. Works by the graduates of the Fashion Design program will also be on display at the BFA & MFA Exhibition. The exhibition provides families, friends, and the general public with an opportunity to discover the outstanding works of a new generation of art and design talent in Qatar who are incorporating local, regional and international ideas in creative ways.
