Qatar University College of Health Sciences (QU-CHS) Assistant Professor and BSc Coordinator of the Public Health Department Dr Karam Turk-Adawi was awarded the Guest Speaker Award during the “4th Heart Hospital Nursing Grand Round”, which was recently held at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) Heart Hospital.

Dr Karam Turk-Adawi gave a presentation on “Cardiac Rehabilitation Programs in Future”, in which she highlighted the status of cardiac rehabilitation (CR) through preliminary results of the “ICCPR Global Survey on Cardiac Rehabilitation”.

Dr Adawi described the global burden of cardiovascular diseases as killer number one worldwide, which is on top priorities of international societies such as the World Health Organization. She highlighted the benefits of cardiac rehabilitation (CR) in reducing mortality and morbidity among patients with heart disease. She revealed shortage in CR services with only 54% of the countries implementing CR. She also addressed CR team specialties and the important role of nurses and physiotherapists to conduct the program, as well as the barriers to CR and strategies to increase its provision in the future such as systematic patient referral to the program.

CHS Dean and QU Biomedical Research Center Director Prof Asmaa Al Thani said: “Community outreach and awareness activities are part of CHS mission. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in Qatar. Preventive strategies such as the cardiac rehabilitation program are required. However, there is a need for well-qualified staff including physiotherapists to conduct the program. In this context and in line with the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030 to address the local needs for highly skilled health professionals, CHS launched the Physiotherapy Program. We look forward to advancing the health care sector in Qatar through the expertise of our faculty and graduates.”
